Hospitals of the Future: Designing Interactive Robotic Systems for Resilient Emergency Departments

Overview

The Emergency Department (ED) is stressful, chaotic, and often understaffed leading healthcare workers (HCWs) to become physically and mentally exhausted and to experience burnout. Thus, we need to better understand the experiences of HCWs and how they interact with the built environment of the ED to find ways to reduce their stress and workload. We utilized design fiction to help facilitate discussions about technology in the ED. We created a design fiction probe, and then co-designed a design fiction catalog with HCWs. The catalog shows robot prototypes that were created during the interviews with HCWs.

My Role in the Project

1. I proposed the used methodology; I pitched ideas for the live-co-design and storyboarding interview process and helped draft/edit interview questions.
2. I helped conducte interviews with HCWs, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses. I sketched prototypes of the robots in the ED in real-time during the co-design part of the interview with participants.
3. I conducted grounded theory analysis on interview transcripts and helped brainstorm, write, and edit the paper. I specifically helped with the Discussion section of the paper by helping frame and write the ‘Design for Resilience: a roadmap’ section.
